iwb’s own research production line covers the entire battery production process chain. Research focuses on the upscaling of laboratory standards to industrial production and the development of new process technologies in battery production. Large-format pouch or hard case cells can be produced.
Within the ProZell research cluster, iwb is involved in the subprojects MiKal, ProfiStruk, Sim4Pro, Cell-Fill and E-Qual. In the subproject MiKal, iwb investi-gates the impact of mixing and coating/drying on the compaction behavior of the electrode and resulting cell performance. MiKal aims at higher volumetric energy densities with constant electrochemical performance. The introduction of struc-tures into electrodes offers high potential with regard to faster charging and dis-charging rates, but previous approaches offer insufficient process speeds. iwb plans to advance the development of processes and equipment for the inline structuring of lithium ion electrodes in the subproject ProfiStruk. In the subproject Cell-Fill, iwb plans to reduce the times of the filling and wetting processes of large-format battery cells by 50 %. In the subproject E-Qual, iwb plans to advance the data-based development of flexible system concepts, sustainable manufacturing processes and innovative quality assurance methods in battery cell production. Within the digitization platform Sim4Pro the iwb investigates the filling process and the prediction of intermediate product properties. The resulting cell performance including the scatter in product quality between different cells of the same batch is also determined.
